Berlin is experiencing a major shift –  leaving the car behind is encouraged and new ways of urban mobility are becoming ubiquitous. But surveys show that safety in traffic is a significant barrier. Is Berlin’s infrastructure lagging behind?

The Ministry of State Security (“Stasi”) of the GDR was one of the largest secret security apparatus in the world in terms of its population. In East Berlin, the Stasi maintained a large number of secret service buildings, bases and thousands of “conspiratorial apartments”. Furthermore, the Stasi was also present in the western part of the city. Even today, numerous traces of the Stasi can be discovered in the cityscape.
